Doujinshi – A quick look at erotic fanfiction

Doujinshi. A word that a lot of collectors and anime, manga enthusiasts come across almost every time the hobby is brought up. If we look at the official meaning it is a very simple thing: Self-published works. Yes. The word ‘doujinshi’ means that it is self-published by the author and it is not affiliated with a publisher. It can be a short magazine, a whole book, manga or a light novel. Anything that is made and put out by the author’s own hands falls under the word; doujinshi.

As to what it means to the erotic side of the manga industry, it mostly became synonymous with works that take a popular anime, manga or anything else and uses their characters to tell and draw any kind of steamy and hot story, played out in that specific universe. Even if it means a lot of people use the definition incorrectly, you can’t deny the fact that for most people who hear the word ‘doujinshi’, they immediately think about their own favourite anime and their characters depicted by being fueled by their own carnival lust!

If you are a veteran in the field of the industry, you already know about conventions being held in Japan, that are specifically hosted for authors to showcase and sell their own works. Most famous and largest amongst these conventions is called; Comiket, short for Comic Market. We have a blog post about it, going into more detail, if you are interested, you can read it here!

These conventions gave us multiple, and I mean MULTIPLE great works throughout the long years! So I thought it would be best to go through two lists, yes, two! As I mentioned, doujinshi does not mean it must be a parody of an existing IP (intellectual property), yet most readers think about those books when speaking about doujinshi. So I decided to come up with two lists, one bringing you 5 doujins straight from the pens of masters and a second list with parodies of some of the most popular 5 anime titles of all-time!

The first list you are going to read about is the list of true masters! I tried to pick out 5 really great artists for you all to browse from! Please note that this is not a top-type list, the numbers are here only to keep the post neat and easy to read and that is all! If everything is clear, then let us jump right into the first list!

5 – Asanagi

Is there really a list of any kind of ertoic arts without him? No, I don’t think so! If I may be so bold, I would say he is the main one responsible for making ‘ahegao’ mainstream! The simple fact that his characters’ expressions are so iconic, it became an immediately recognizable trademark of his works! By now I even dare to say that they are the face of the whole adult manga industry! Pun intended. If by any miracle you do not know about him, or are new to the world of manga, then here is one of his doujins to start off with!

Victim Girls 15 – Hara pandemonium

A masterfully crafted, 40 pages long book, debuting on Comiket 84 for those who are into the ‘ryona’ fetish! As to what that word means, it’s simple; abuse. This story parodies the popular game; The Idolmaster and mainly Sachiko Koshimizu from its cast of members. Asanagi’s works are clearly not for the faint-hearted and this book is no different as Sachiko-chan slowly descends into full depravity, getting addicted to orgasms caused by belly punching, shocking her own uterus! Follow her as her mind slowly breaking down and how she transforms from a loved, popular idol into nothing more than a broken toy and her own cravings’ slave, addicted to pain!

4 – Pochi

As I previously said, doujinshi does not mean it must be a parody of some sorts. The perfect example here is no other than Pochi herself, now known as Iida Pochi! She did dabble with erotic parodies of the series ‘Dagashi Kashi’ in the past but her biggest break was the original story of hers, the ‘Ane Naru Mono’ series! What started as a lovely, short love story between a boy named Yuu and Shub-Niggurath, became so popular as to have 10+ instalments and later on turned into a full-fledged manga series! Not to mention that she herself is now a popular Virtual YouTuber!

Ane Naru Mono

The story that started it all, from Comiket 89! The first appearance of Yuu and his ‘Onee-chan’, Chiyo, who is in fact none other than The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young! Making a pact with our lonely protagonist now she lives with him as a member of his family. The only family he left with, his lovely, caring Onee-chan! Maybe even overly caring as “poor” Yuu soon realises, her title is not just for a show, and he alone may need to perform what not even thousands of other youngsters could and keep up with! Mainly meaning; Chiyo’s libido! If you ever followed the Ane Naru Mono series these doujinshi books are a must as they perfectly fit into the manga, serving as side stories, depicting their bond that would be too steamy for the non-erotic version of the series!

 

3 – ShindoL

Who says drawing doujinshi is the exclusive right of Japanese born artists? Here comes someone from Queens, New York, rising to the top of Japan’s hentai industry! His pen and his talent were everything he needed to become one of the most recognized artists, dabbling in all of the hardcore fetishes, be it drugs, asphyxiation or a wild bestiality adventure. His stories are ranging from incest to gender-bender stories mixed in with the spice of some futanari fetish! There is probably no genre he did not challenge himself in! His ‘TSF Monogatari’ doujinshi series even became so popular that it got adapted into its own animation! Now that is a success story if I ever heard one!

The second extra story for ShindoL’s original series, coming from Comiket 86! Even if you are not familiar with the main story but you are into some really hot and kinky stuff, then this book is for you, 100%! If you are not really caught up with the story, all you need to know is that Takumi, by accident, ended up in a female body. He, or since then, She, experienced what it means to be a female… sorry, I mean to be a bitch. A bitch in heat. Every day of the year. Searching for nothing more but more cocks to sit on. By now, for Takumi, it does not matter whose dick is in her constantly burning, moist vagina just let something be in it… even if it ends up impregnating her!

2 – Koume Keito

Maybe his name does not ring an instant bell for you, like some of the previous artists, but I am sure as soon as you read some of the titles he has worked on, you are going to know in what style he draws in! For one, he is the illustrator for the story of Spice and Wolf and also the one who drew the manga version of it! Maybe this is the reason that none of his doujinshi works are about Holo and Lawrence. He also had a hand in multiple other mangas and even in eroge games so he is not a stranger when it comes to drawing erotic stories! The main proof of that is his book, titled ‘The Pollinic Girls Attack!’ that also received a hentai anime adaptation! Maybe someday we are going to finally get a Spice and Wolf doujinshi from him… it would be the most authentic “fan fiction”. Like… ever.

 

Homunculus

A parody of the series ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’ featuring two girls from the series, namely Homura Akemi and Madoka Kaname, published at Comiket 80! If people think of parody stories when mentioning doujins, then if you say the word ‘hentai’ to someone who is not into the hobby, I am almost sure he or she would immediately think about tentacle monsters raping young girls… and going by this book, well, they would be completely right! Of course it is not all gloom and doom because even if Homura-chan is being assaulted by a monster, Madoka is there to save the day and make her forget every bad thing!

1 – Ishikei

Another artist who may not make you associate his name with his works instantly but I am sure as soon as one of his works’ covers comes across before your eyes, you would know who he is! Few draw full-colour doujinshis and artbooks like him! The curves of the girls’ bodies, be it their perfectly shaped breasts, thick thighs, their tummies inviting you to cuddle with them, these girls are simply the examples of perfection! If you are not into the type of girls who are blessed with heavy weaponry, then don’t worry as Ishikei have you covered, drawing multiple parodies of popular anime titles, featuring their petit stars, like Nezuko from Kimetsu no Yaiba or the likes of Mikan from To LOVE-Ru!

A perfect artbook to showcase what Ishikei is capable of! Every page of it is simply oozing eroticisim! New artists are always making their debuts, old masters coming out with new works, so it is always an awaited time when a Comiket is held in Japan! For the next list, let’s jump into some of the most known series’ parodies, that spawned multitude of doujinshis, featuring the series’ stars in much more revealing events than their shows ever did!

5 – One Piece

There was a time when the three juggernauts were running simultaneously, being One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. I could’ve picked any of them as I am sure there are a lot of collectors out there nowadays who grew up on those series! I picked One Piece for this spot by a simple fact, it is still on, coming out in both anime and manga form. Maybe back then you fantasised about some of the shows’ characters and don’t worry, you are not alone in that! By now there are multiple options with all kind of stories to choose from, you just need to find the character you are interested in~

Nami-san Ga! By Nora Higuma

Nora Higuma’s doujin debuted on Comiket 81, featuring Nami from One Piece. Nora’s works usually are much more mellow but in this story she shows us that a pirate’s life could easily go awry, especially if she is not prepared for the consequences of her notoriety! With a bounty on her head Nami is the perfect target for bounty hunters, especially if the aforementioned group are more interested in her well adorned body than the bounty itself!

4 – Code Geass

For next I decided to pick one, based on the fact that the anime, Code Geass’s protagonist, Lelouch vi Britannia is still on the top of many lists if it comes to the main characters’ popularity. And for a good reason. The series was filled with more than one charismatic and beautiful woman, no wonder that the time it was airing doujins constantly popped up left and right!

Majo Yome Nikki R2 by Koume Keito

Those who are familiar with the series of Code Geass, usually belong to one of the two biggest camps. Either shipping Lelouch with Kallen or with C.C. (Sorry Shirley fans!) Now, in this doujinshi you don’t need to choose! As a wise girl once said: ‘Why don’t we have both?’ To bring back the leader of the Black Knight’s memories there was only one way and that was C.C. and Kallen working together, making sure Lelouch remembers their bodies, never again forgetting them! No matter which camp you were a fan of before, you can’t ignore the fact that this is the best solution as it comes with the extra benefit of seeing C.C. and Kallen comforting each other!

3 – Sword Art Online

Nobody can deny the simple fact that when the first SAO season came out it was a big hit. It put the series on the map, spawned not just continuous seasons throughout the years but also video games. As to what SAO became instead of what it should have been is another debate, but its popularity also meant that erotic spoofs were quickly arriving and let’s be honest, what it did not lack was cute girls!

Asuna ni 100% Nama nakadashi Shimasu by Hanahanamaki & Sousouman

The blooming love between Kirito and Asuna was one of the focal points of the original series. If you were a fan, who always imagined what may have happened between them, that was never shown, then this book is a perfect pickup! Especially because it is completely in colour! 64 pages of beautifully drawn art, in all of its glory and stories of our heroes, engaging in multiple “side quests”! Nobody can’t argue against that, between life and death battles, there has to be time to blow off some… steam!

2 – To LOVE-Ru

There are a lot of popular, rom-com and/or slice of life mangas that spawned erotic fanfictions but if I had to pick one, the first to come in mind would be the To LOVE-Ru series! The show itself, be it the manga or anime adaptation, pushed the boundaries of what should and could be allowed as a fanservice, so it was no question if there would be doujinshis that went even further! When the line between softcore and hardcore is this thin, nobody can blame the artists to jump on it and let their imaginations run wild!

Momo+Kan by Ameto Yuki

Debuting on Comiket 82, this 16 pages long doujinshi revolves around Mikan and Momo, having fun on the beach! Sexy bikini? Check. School swimsuit? Check. Then the only remaining task is to apply the perfect sunscreen on the girls’ bodies, in a way only Rito could do~ And they are eager to help him do it! There is no better protection against ultraviolet light than a thick coat of semen! Scientifically proven! Trust me! Oh and yes! All of this is in completely full colour, so you won’t miss out on anything!

1 – The Idolmaster & Kantai Collection

Surprise! I couldn’t choose. So this last portion is going to feature two franchises! Both Are extremely popular, and there are no questions about why! The Idolmaster series began as a rhythm game mixed with some raising-sim elements and soon spawned multiple series in every possible media! The setting is perfect, the cast is diverse and ever expanding, it is a source of all and any kind of doujins! Whatever the author’s imagination comes up with can be done, the question only is, which character gets chosen! What about the Kantai Collection? In all honesty, the same! Starting out as a ship-girl collecting game it soon trickled down into all media formats for the exact same reasons. Abundant of girl characters, just waiting to be drawn in the most sensual and erotic way, in any kind of story that you can imagine! I can’t think of any other franchises that would be even more popular and produce more doujinshis than these two!

Kawaii Boku wa, Mayu-san de Zettai Tokken Shuchou Shimasu! By Kirin Kakeru
