History of artistic repression:

Nowadays the concept of “hentai artist” is based more on the artistic part of the content of their works than on their erotic part, since the current freedom of expression allows the artist to give free rein to their imagination by creating artistic works of great value. But this freedom was not achieved until the end of the Second World War with the “Act of Surrender of Japan” which put an end to an era of censorship for any publication.

Hentai was born around our 16th century at the hands of Shunda, the Japanese erotic art that existed since the Heian period (740 AD – 1185 AD). At this time this type of art was very popular among the Japanese and its commercialization was carried out without any problem, but the arrival of censorship would change everything. From the hands of the Tokugawa Shogunate, through the Kyoho reforms to the 19th century, the prohibition of this art was increasing. The introduction of law no. 45 prohibiting the sale, possession and exhibition of these works did not help the artists of the time to develop their full potential, and it got worse with the reign of the emperor in 1928, who introduced the death penalty for violation of this censorship. But all this would come to an end with the surrender of Japan in the Second World War, the strong persecution towards this type of practice was relaxed and publication was again allowed under lighter censorship rules. The penal code was in conflict with the freedom of expression in the Japanese constitution, so hentai was allowed to return to the media, but censorship, even if minimal, was mandatory.

The censorship that this artistic movement has suffered in Japan has lasted for many years and therefore, to this day, this practice is not usually freely approved on a social level. The artists, who take so much time to create their works, are still not 100% valued as true virtuous.
Among these artists, It is worth mentioning the fathers of this genre, who were able to break the taboos of censorship in a very dark period.

Azuma Hideo (吾妻ひでお) (1950)

He began in the world of manga when he was a teenager and continued to progress in this field throughout his life, thanks to this he won several awards such as the Seiun Award (1979) and the Tezuka Award (2006). He is considered the father of lolicon thanks to his work Cybele (1979), which consists of several volumes where he illustrates, through simple strokes, comics with female protagonists and with clearly lolicon characteristics.

Maeda Toshio (前田俊夫) (1953)

His first steps as a hentai artist were thanks to the drawing techniques taught by his brother, and at the age of 16 he left his hometown in Osaka to become a professional drawing assistant in Tokyo. He later specialized in adult manga and created his iconic work Urotsukidoji (1986), a 6-volume manga series that recreates a world full of sex-thirsty demons and with which he popularized the tentacle genre. The idea of monsters and tentacles allowed him to circumvent the censorship of the time, since the genitals were not properly human, so its publication was approved.

Yui Toshiki (唯登詩樹) (1956)

Japanese manga artist, born in Kyoto Japan, and still working there. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Kyoto Sangyo University, he worked part-time at a bookstore and then for seven years as a textile designer for Kyoto Traditional Crafts. During that time, he continued to contribute to manga magazines.
He is also famous for using Macintosh computers in his drawings from the beginning of his career, and often uses them in his own works. He began publishing in 1986, specializing in eroticism and explicit hentai. He stands out for his work Hot Tails, which is a compilation of short comics where sexual scenes occur, most of them with a main character of the futanari genre. Yui Toshiki was one of the first to popularize this genre.

 

Teruo Kakuta – Kondom (昆童虫) (70’s)  

Known by the pseudonym Kondom (昆童虫 Kon Doumishi), which means small insect in Japanese, he was born in Ibaraki prefecture and currently resides in Tokyo. He is the creator of the Bondage Fairies saga, where genres such as yuri, masturbation, bondage and bestiality are touched upon.

8. ShindoL (新堂エル)

In 8th place is ShindoL, hentai artist born in Queens (New York) from where he moved to Tokyo in order to work in the adult manga industry.
In his works, this amazing artist, uses very varied genres, from schoolgirls and small-breasted nurses to incest and bestiality scenes, all with a touch of sexual abuse.
ShindoL is the only member of the Da Hootch circle where he has published all his works highlighting the TSF Monogatari doujin series, which has been adapted to anime due to the great reception by the public. 7. Shiwasu no Okina (師走の翁)

At number 7 we have Shiwasu no Okina, an artist born in Yamaguchi prefecture and known worldwide.
This virtuous mangaka focuses on Shotacon, Lolicon, Schoolgirls and MILF genres and so he creates his wonderful works.
Both his original manga and doujin adaptations have a huge popularity in the hentai world. One of these wonderful works is Peace Hame! Ge, an original manga of 308 pages, which begins by narrating the intense student life of Tamao-kun, a young teenager who helps his classmates to relax after a hard day at school. The second half of the manga deals with the story between Konome and Tamao, the latter must save Konome from the clutches of the evil school principal and his sexual henchmen.

6. Takeda Hiromitsu (武田弘光)

In the number 6 spot is Takeda Hiromitsu, a Japanese artist whose most popular genres are based on Shotacon, Schoolgirls and MILF, always with a good amount of huge breasts.
Some of his works have been adapted to anime such as the Kedamono-tachi no Sumu Ie de or Maken-ki! series, the latter being the most famous and the one with the most installments.

Among his written works we will highlight the manga Sister Breeder of 222 pages, which tells the story of Shouta and her two sisters, Oomiya and Aina. Shouta has a special affection for her two sisters, so, after turning her older sister into her sex slave, it is onii-chan’s turn to play with the little one.

5. Oda Non (織田non)

At number 5 we have the Japanese mangaka Oda Non, whose creativity and good design have led her to participate in the creation of characters for erotic anime series such as Bikini Warriors or Queen’s Blade.

In her hentai works, Oda Non presents a clear inclination towards the MILF genre. Her drawing style is very characteristic, highlighting the use of clean lines and realistic features, with which the artist perfectly expresses the feelings she wants to convey.

One of her works to highlight is H na Toshiue no Hitozuma Onna Joushi Bon, a 32-page full color doujin, in which the shotacon and MILF genres merge. The first part deals with the story of Yuri and her nephews, a story of incest and groping that ends up making Yuri-san a sex slave.
